Worse than lack of knowledge about addiction, is the wrong knowledge about addiction
WHY: Addiction medicine must be the least well-understood area of medicine, not just for the public but for physicians, as well. Practically none of the physicians in practice today had training in addiction medicine through medical school. Even worse than lack of knowledge about addiction is wrong knowledge about the disease, leading to poor policies, poor advice, poor care for our patients and their families, and poor outcomes.
WHO: Target audience for this website includes healthcare professionals as well as non-medical stakeholders from patients and their families to those in criminal justice, administrators and policymakers.
For physicians, the opioid epidemic has such a broad footprint that it touches almost all medical practices, regardless of specialty. Yet, there is no easily available resource for clinicians to quickly learn about addiction. Going to formal conferences on addiction medicine is expensive and time-consuming while self-learning online often leads to highly opinionated or agenda-filled websites.
HOW: This website is designed with a “Cliff Notes” approach for interested individuals. By reading short articles of about 1500 words or less, or watching 4-minute videos, readers can rapidly build up a better understanding of addiction to guide their decision-making.
